Environmental Performance Indicators
Sustainability KPIs are playing an increasingly important role in purchasing decisions. There are many reasons for this, including environmental protection, environmental management system certification, better energy efficiency and cost reduction. To meet these needs, we are now providing you with sustainability KPIs that you can use in purchasing decisions and to help you offset carbon emissions.
These sustainability KPIs show electricity consumption and carbon emissions for a central IT security monitoring PC that operates non-stop. Our test set-up recreated a realistic environment, but did not take the monitor or the network’s electricity consumption into account as there is too much deviation between the electricity consumption of the hardware on the market. Using our IT security monitoring PC, we measured Security Lighthouse’s energy efficiency in combination with three different browsers: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
The results show electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, which we derived from our test measurements. They also show the annual carbon emissions that the set-up would produce.* The best results were achieved when Security Lighthouse was paired with Mozilla Firefox on our test PC. In total, this set-up used 219 kWh per year (equivalent to 126 kg of CO2) – just 4 kWh more than the PC used in idle mode (124 kg of CO2). With Internet Explorer, Security Lighthouse used 233 kWh annually (134 kg of CO2). Paired with Google Chrome, it used 244 kWh per year (141 kg of CO2).
The study describes the test conditions in detail and provides other important data. It includes a calculation of how much additional electricity the browsers use when running Security Lighthouse versus how much electricity the PC uses when idle.
* To calculate carbon emissions, we took the electricity consumption figure and multiplied it by a factor of 576g CO2/kWh, the official figure for the German electricity mix in 2012. AMPEG Security Lighthouse is a vendor-independent tool for the overall Monitoring, Reporting and the Security Level Management.
Since 2009 until today AMPEG is a certified climate-neutral company (Certificate ID: 31898). This was all made possible by the reduction measures performed by AMPEG from 2003 onwards. These measures have also ensured that the AMPEG product Security Lighthouse could be developed, supported and sold on an climate neutral basis.
